The Kremlin on Sunday accused the US embassy of interfering in Russia’s domestic affairs after the mission distributed a “demonstration alert” to US citizens in Russia recommending they avoid protests.

“Of course, these publications are inappropriate,” President Vladimir Putin’s spokeswoman Dmitry Peskov told a state TV channel in comments carried by Russian news agencies. “And of course indirectly, they are absolutely an interference in our domestic affairs.”

The accusation came a day after Russian police made at least 3,500 arrests during Saturday’s mass protests across the country, OVD Info watchdog reported, including dozens of journalists and over 100 adolescents.

From the Far East to Moscow, thousands took to the streets in Russian cities to protest the detention of Alexei Navalny, an anti-corruption activist detained last week after returning from Germany, where he was recovering from a poisoning attack blamed by Bellingcat independent investigators on Russia’s special services.

In Yakutsk, East Siberia, the demonstrators braved temperature of about -50 degrees Celcius to come out in support of the opposition figurehead, while in Moscow, according to Reuters, some 40,000 took part in protests.
