A new chareidi department was set up by Israel’s left-wing Labor Party, which is presently part of the Zionist Union. At its first meeting presided over by its founders, Michel Chernovitzki and Penina Pfeufer, former Labor leader Amir Peretz declared that the party would have a chareidi representative in the next elections.

Peretz said that the group would “prove that we are not anti-religious and that we are open to religion and tradition.”
