Lakewood: Erev Shabbos Chanukah Traffic Alert

cars-congestion-pricing-trafficAs we’ve reported in years past, Erev Shabbos Chanukah is an unusually busy traffic day, especially for those who are traveling from the Ihr Hatorah of Lakewood, NJ, to spend Shabbos with relatives in other areas of the Tri-State.

Because so many people leave at the same time, Squankum Road leading to the I-195 gets backed up with motorists waiting to cross the intersection of Old Tavern Road and Lakewood Farmingdale Road – at the end of Squankum Road – just south of the exit to I-195.

Police Chief Rob Lawson of the Lakewood Police Department, at the urging of Lakewood Committeeman R’ Menashe Miller, has worked for an officer to be stationed at that intersection to help keep the flow of traffic moving on this very short Friday.

We would recommend that travelers consider taking alternate routes to the Garden State Parkway by entering at other entrance points near Lakewood. One alternative is to take County Line Road east to the end. Make a left, continuing until Burnt Tavern Road, and follow signs to the Garden State Parkway North. Also, especially for those living on the south side of town, one can enter the Parkway at the Cedar Bridge Avenue/Airport Road entrance ramp.

The Lakewood Volunteer Fire Department urges all residents to use extreme caution when lighting their menorahs, to light in a safe area of the house, and to ensure that menorahs are placed out of the reach of children.

  1. “As we’ve reported in years past, Erev Shabbos Chanukah is an unusually busy traffic day, especially for those who are traveling from the Ihr Hatorah of Lakewood, NJ, to spend Shabbos with relatives in other areas of the Tri-State.”
Anybody know which city was considered to be the Ihr Hatorah before the existance of Lakewood? Why was Lakewood Zocheh to acquire the name from the former city? Why wasnt perhaps an “Ihr” in Eretz Yiroel crowned with that title before Lakewood. Why not Yerushalayim or Bnei Brak? Can it be a Bizoyen for Eretz Yisroel C”V? Sometimes individuals even confuse the title of Ihr Hakodosh with Lakewood!!!!

  2. > “…Ihr Hatorah of Lakewood…”

    >> Hello! In case you haven’t noticed, Klal Yisrael has returned to Eretz Yisrael which is the true Eretz HaTorah. There is no longer any Ihr HaTorah in chutz l’Aretz and it is the height of arrogance to suggest so. Jews in this generation choose to voluntarily dismiss the Emes of Torah as taught in the Gemara (Kiddushin 110b), that: “whoever dwells outside of Eretz Yisrael is as if he is an idol worshipper.” And, of course, galus loving idol worshippers cannot possibly be bnei TORAH nor establish cities of Torah outside of Eretz Yisrael! As Rav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld zt”l clearly warned chutz l’Aretz Jews: “ANYONE who has the ability to come to Eretz Yisrael and doesn’t, will have to account for his FAILURE [to make Aliyah] in HaOlam Haba.” [Ha’ish Al Hachoma, vol. II, p.149)

  3. Don’t understand what the obligation of moving to Eretz Yisrael has to do with lakewood being the Ihr Hatorah. Its not a opinion its factual there is more torah being learned there than anywhere in the world. If you’re unconvinced go and check it out. So settle down and propose your aliyah initiative on a diffrent forum (wish i don’t mean to disregard in any way and agree that halachically its not pashut at all to live in chutz laaretz).
