matzav-logoDeveloping: [Updates below.] Lakewood – Over 20 ambulances and many police officers are currently on scene at a hazmat incident at 180 Lehigh Avenue in Lakewood’s Industrial Park.

The Berkeley Hazmat team is present and a helicopter is hovering overhead as an incident continues to unfold.

“There was some kind of leak, maybe nitrogen,” one witness told Matzav.com, adding that dozens have been taken to nearby Kimball Medical Center.

Further information will be forthcoming.

2:31 p.m.: It appears that about two dozen people – maybe more – were exposed to nitrous oxide, also known as liquid nitrogen, at 180 Lehigh Avenue at Cuisine Innovations. The building is owned by Spar-Tex.

3:13 p.m.: We are told that over 30 people were taken to the hospital. The incident began shortly after noon at Cuisine Innovations.

Local askanim say that the response of EMS, Lakewood First Aid, Hatzolah, the local police department the Hazmat Unit of Berkley and other personnel was “nothing less than remarkable.”

  1. Nitrous oxide is laughing gas and probably wouldn’t require a hospital. Liquid nitrogen will freeze anything it gets in contact with but is unlikely to hurt many people as it evaporates within seconds of exposure to air.
    Some information is missing.

  2. This is not a time to grant awards for “remarkable” work on behalf of departments who should always be performing remarkably. Rather get us some better/clearer updates on this pikuach nefesh situation.
