lakewood-policeUpdate below:  The Lakewood Police Department has just arrested the driver responsible for the death last night of Habochur Shalom Werther z”l. The 18-year-old motorist, who fled the scene of last night’s accident on Cedar Bridge Avenue after fatally hitting Shalom, is a resident of neighboring Bricktown, Matzav.com has been told. Further information will be made available by police officials.

The accident occured as Shalom was crossing Cedar Bridge Avenue at Melville Avenue, near Dina’s Dinettes,  at 7:48 p.m. last night when he was struck by what police said was a sedan-type car.

Police collected pieces of the vehicle left behind and analyzed the items in hopes of identifying the vehicle type. This, Matzav.com is told, assisted them in finding the driver.

Police had sent out a broadcast in Ocean and Monmouth counties asking police to search for a car with recent front end damage consistent with striking a pedestrian.

Update, 11:35 p.m. EST: Paul Kulha, 18, of Essex Drive, Brick, was arrested earlier this evening after authorities received information from the public about the vehicle that had left the scene, said Capt. John Mount of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities notified the Werther family about 9:30 p.m. that they had the driver in custody.

Police did not release information about the arrest of Kulha, who was charged and held in lieu of $50,000 bail set by Superior Court Judge James Den Uyl.

Mount was at the house on Essex Drive in the Lake Riviera section of Brick where the car was being hoisted up onto a tow truck at about 8:30 p.m. The gold Cadillac Seville had a broken headlight on the driver’s side and a broken windshield.
