bais-hatorahJust over two weeks after Yeshiva Bais Hatorah in Lakewood, NJ, was forced to close due to a financial shortfall, it was announced last night that the school will be reopening under new leadership. The mosad, Matzav.com has learned, has been taken over by Rabbi Shlomo Chaim Kanarek, one of the foremost askanim in Lakewood in the fields of chinuch and chesed.

The news of the reopening of Bais Hatorah has been greeted with joy by the majority of the 400 students who were displaced by the school’s closing and were not enrolled in another mosad in the interim.

Bais Hatorah – now entering its 12th year – had closed due to a $500,000 shortfall and a p’sak received by its prior administration from Rav Matisyahu Salomon that it may not open until a responsible budget is formed.

The new school, we are told, will be housed at the former campus of Bais Shaindel High School, located on Monmouth Avenue, between Third and Fourth Streets.

Yeshiva Bais Hatorah will be the fifth prominent mosad hachinuch in Lakewood under the auspices of the tireless Rabbi Kanarek, who founded and directs Bais Shaindel Girls High School, Bais Rivkah Rochel Girls Elemetary School, and two boys elementary schools, Toras Aron and Shaagas Aryeh.

Rabbi Kanarek is also a noted Daf Yomi maggid shiur at Chevrah Lomdei Torah in Lakewood and a tireless askan who is osek betzorchei tzibbur be’emunah.

The new school will continue to follow, for the most part, the Zilberman method of learning employed at the former Yeshiva Bais Hatorah. Some parents of the now defunct school may join to form a new mosad that will strictly follow the Zilberman approach, but that has not yet been ironed out as of this writing.

The menahel of the new mosad will be Rabbi Yaakov Landesman, formerly menahel of Yeshiva Nesivos Ohr in Lakewood. Prior to that, Rabbi Landesman served as menahel of Mirrer Yeshiva, s’gan menahel at Yeshiva Torah Vodaas and menahel of Yeshiva Tiferes Moshe of Queens. Rabbi Landesman, a talmid of Rav Aharon Kotler zt”l, Rav Shneur Kotler zt”l and the Philadelphia Yeshiva, is known as a distinguished and veteran mechanech.

Rabbi Ephraim Shraga Shain will assume the position of curriculum director of the school.

The former campus of Yeshiva Bais Hatorah on Swarthmore Avenue in Lakewood’s Industrial Park will possibly now be sold to pay for the building’s mortgage and the 14-week delay in salary payments to the 17 rabbeim and other employees.

Just last week, another yeshiva in Lakewood, Yeshivat Keter Torah, was forced to close due to a shortfall of $500,000. That school, which had about 150 students, has since merged with its branch in Deal, NJ.
