sukkah-collapseWednesday afternoon, October 7, the largest sukkah on the Lower East Side of Manhattan collapsed under heavy winds. The sukkah was originally 36×36 feet in size. The winds reduced it to carnage.

“It looked like a tsunami had hit,” said one observer.

A limited damage control session took place in the evening until the area was deemed too dangerous. Yesterday morning, beginning at 8 a.m., community volunteers and the sukkah‘s contractor were on the scene repairing damaged panels and assessing the overall damage. After about 10 hours of work, only one third of the sukkah had been rebuilt. The rebuilt section seems stable.

Due to the costliness of the emergency work, donations are being accepted, Matzav.com is told. Despite the many volunteers, the contractors had to come down and fresh wood was needed to replace the many damaged 2x4s.

Checks can be made out to “East River Succah Association” and mailed to East River Sukkah, c/o The Berman Family, 573 Grand Street, Apt D201, New York, NY 10002.
