lititia-jamesNew York – Councilwoman Letitia James, a Brooklyn Democrat, has become the first black woman to be elected to citywide office in New York.

James will be New York’s next public advocate. Laurie Cumbo will take her City Council seat.

“Yes, this is indeed historic, because our government must be representative of all New Yorkers,” said James in her victory speech. “What I’m really proud of is the fact that we ran a campaign centered on progressive ideas.”
