Dear Friends,
As you are no doubt aware, the Orthodox community in New York State currently finds itself in grave danger. Recent Education Department overreach into our curriculum poses an existential threat to the Yeshiva system as we know it.  The danger is real, it is imminent, and it is universal to all New York State Yeshivos. If allowed to stand in New York State, it will no doubt spread to other states as well.
An unfolding political situation presents an opportunity for our community to take concrete action in this regard. On Tuesday, February 26 there will be a special election to elect the New York City Public Advocate. There are more than fifteen candidates who are running in this election. One of them is NYC Councilman Eric Ulrich, who is a longtime proven friend of our community and has a track record of speaking out publicly against these interferences into our education system. He has a particular understanding of the threat that these regulations pose to religious schools, as he himself is a graduate of a Catholic school and his daughter currently attends one as well.
If – and only if – we work together, our community can prove to be the deciding force in this election. Electing Eric Ulrich as Public Advocate will send a loud and clear message to the forces in New York that are looking to control the education of Yeshiva children. Councilman Ulrich will use his position of Public Advocate to fight in the halls of power on our behalf.
I urge all members of New York City’s Jewish community to take the time to go out and vote for Councilman Eric Ulrich for Public Advocate on Tuesday, February 26, 2019.
Sincerely, Harav Aharon Moshe Schechter

  1. “Does the city public advocate have control over the state education dept?”

I think the Rosh Yeshiva shlit”a answers your question in the letter (see quote below).

. . . NYC Councilman Eric Ulrich, who is a longtime proven friend of our community and has a track record of speaking out publicly against these interferences into our education system. He has a particular understanding of the threat that these regulations pose to religious schools, as he himself is a graduate of a Catholic school and his daughter currently attends one as well. . .

  2. To “Anonymous”: No, he doesn’t have “control” over the state education dept, but vocal support of the Yeshiva system within the city government can certainly influence the state education dept. So please, let us put our cynicism aside and listen to our Gedolei Yisrael.

    • i am not sure that there was cynicism in the question. While the NYC public advocate has no control over the state education department he would have some influence over the NYC BOE.

  3. Dozens of Gedolim including Harav bender, Harav Yisroel Reisman, Harav elya Brudney, Harav Grunblatt R”y of chofetz chaim, Harav shalom Spitz R”y of Shaar hatorah in queens have endorsed Eric and encourage all yidden to vote for him.
PLEASE GO OUT AND VOTE FOR ERIC!!!

  4. For any Jew that associates himself with Yiddishkeit and following our religion’s leaders, please go out and vote for Eric Ulrich. If not for the sake of listening to our Spiritual Leaders, do it for the sake of helping out your children or your friend’s children. Thank you
