Mexican and Guatemalan law enforcement agencies conducted a coordinated operation along their shared border, aiming to stop the leaders of the radical Lev Tahor cult from fleeing the region.
This operation was prompted by fears that the cult’s leaders might try to smuggle more children out, following the recent rescue of approximately 200 cult members during a police raid.
In response, Mexico’s Foreign Ministry deployed special forces to monitor the border, with particular attention given to the Chiapas region, where the cult had previously operated.
The Guatemalan government issued a warning, stating, “They will try to hide among the thousands of immigrants crossing the border every day.”
This operation stems from the cult’s disturbing history. Since its inception in Israel in 1988, Lev Tahor’s members – who dress like chareidi Jews – have moved across various countries, leaving behind a trail of horrific accounts involving forced child marriages and widespread abuse.
Back in September 2022, Mexican authorities conducted a raid at an immigration facility near the Guatemala border, arresting 17 members of the Lev Tahor sect. During the operation, 26 cult members were discovered in the compound, including two individuals—a Canadian and an Israeli citizen—who were taken into custody on charges of human trafficking and serious offenses, which could result in up to 20 years of imprisonment.
