rav-meir-justThe levaya of Rav Meir Just zt”l, longtime chief rabbi of Amsterdam is being held today following his petirah on Erev Shabbos at the age of 101. Rav Just was born in Hungary and later moved to Germany. With the rise of the Nazi regime, he returned to his parents’ home and subsequently became chairman of Zeirei Agudas Yisroel. During World War II, he fled the Nazis and then moved to Switzerland where he became a R”M at the yeshiva in Montreux. After about 10 years, he was offered the position as chief rabbi of Holland, a post he held for over 45 years.
In his youth, Rav Just grew up in the city of Vizhnitz, Hungary, and was close to the Ahavas Yisroel of Vizhnitz zt”l, for whom his father, Rav Nissan, served as gabbai.

Rav Just was also influenced by Rav Jospeh Breuer zt”l and Rav Pinchos Horowitz zt”l, the Pischa Zuta.
Rav Just was a member of the Conference of European Rabbis and was recognized as a pious person, a tremendous talmid chochom, and the embodiment of kiddush Hashem.

The levaya is being held today in Amsterdam and the niftar is then being flown to Eretz Yisroel, where a levaya will be held in Yerushalayim.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. The petirah of the Rav zt”l is a tremendous loss for the kehilla. The wonderfull thing was that he was so widely respected and beloved here, despite his meticulous enforcement of halachah (which was at times not easy, because of ‘enlightened’ elements within the kehillah). At last night’s communal hesped in Amsterdam, the wide range of people attending bears testimony to this communal respect and admiration. TNteharoTBH.
