Researchers at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan found a possible link between Crohn’s and Parkinson’s diseases in a study involving 24,570 people. Jews of European origin suffering from the latter disorder are more likely to carry the LRRK2 gene mutation, a leading genetic cause of Parkinson’s.
The researchers said the discovery of the gene may lead to a better understanding, treatment and prevention of Crohn’s disease and determine who is at risk for developing Crohn’s, which effects disproportionate numbers of Ashkenazi Jews.
