The Long Island Power Authority is applying the Cash for Clunkers program to old inefficient refrigerators. LIPA is offering its customers – through September – a $75 rebate when they purchase a standard-size Energy Star refrigerator larger than 7.5 cubic feet. The program will be expanded later and will offer customers an additional $30 to help remove and properly dispose and recycle the old fridge. In most households, LIPA says the refrigerator is the single highest energy-consuming kitchen appliance.
It says Energy Star-qualified refrigerators are 40 percent more efficient than models sold in 2001.
Hopefully, this program will have a longer shelf-life than the government’s Cash for Clunkers program. On Thursday, it was announced the program would cease on Monday.
