Last update: 10:42 p.m.] 8:15 p.m. EST: The Matzav.com reporter at The Event in the WaMu Theater in Madison Square Garden says that the concert hall is full and the program is underway. The inclement weather was a nuisance for many travelers, some of whom stopped at the nearby Kosher Delight for a snack or dinner before heading to the musical event. Lipa Schmelczer, one of the stars of the show, has just made a siyum on Maseches Megillah and the musical portion of the program will get underway.

8:29 p.m. EST: A video is being shown of Lipa in Eretz Yisroel looking for Dedi Graucher.

8:33 p.m. EST: Dedi is now on stage.

8:50 p.m. EST: Pirchei is back! The all-new Pirchei choir, led by Eli Gerstner and Yossi Newman, have taken the stage and are singing a medley of old classic Pirchei songs.

8:53 p.m. EST: The Pirchei choir is singing the old classic Ani Maamin, a soul-stirring melody. The large orchestra is led by the renowned Yisroel Lamm.

9:00 p.m. EST: A video is being shown about Jerusalem Open House-Linas Hachesed, which was founded ten years ago and operates as a soup kitchen in the Meah Shearim neighborhood in the heart of Yerushalayim. Open 7 days a week and serving three meals a day, thousands of Yerushalayim’s downtrodden Yidden find their way to the warm confines of Linas Hachesed. Fresh, nourishing hot meals are provided for so many literally starving almanos, yesomim, elderly and infirm Yidden who cannot even put some shekalim together to buy bread.

9:08 p.m. EST: Surprise guest appearance by Rabbi Boruch Chait in honor of Rabbi Eli Teitelbaum zt”l. Rabbi Chait, the renowned composer, is singing Min Hameitzar, which was inspired by Rabbi Teitelbaum and composed with Rabbi Chait on a flight to London.

9:14 p.m. EST: Rabbi Chait has been joined on stage by special guest Yisroel Wulliger as well as the Schapiro brothers, known as Acheinu.

9:22 p.m. EST: A video presentation featuring Abie Rotenberg is being shown. Abie could not attend in person because of a family simcha in Eretz Yisroel.

9:26 p.m. EST: The crowd is being treated to cute little Yehuda Teitelbaum, perhaps 8 years old, who is talking on video about his legendary zaide, Rabbi Eli Teitelbaum zt”l.

9:32 p.m. EST: Mordechai Ben David joins Abie Rotenberg on video singing a special medley arranged for The Event. Abie is playing piano and MBD is sitting next to him, joining him in singing. The musical program switches back and forth between the video and the live Pirchei choir on stage.

9:43 p.m. EST: Lipa is now on stage, singing a variety of his songs in story form, using his creativity to weave the various melodies together.

9:50 p.m. EST: Lipa’s medley has included Gam Zu Letova, Gelt, Binyan Adei Ad and more.

9:55 p.m. EST: Shloime Gertner of England is now singing the song “Shmeichel” on video, accompanied by a group of others acting out the lyrics. Shloime is seen in front of Buckingham Palace trying to make the guards smile. Good luck with that!

9:59 p.m. EST: Lipa is now singing “Just One Shabbos” in Yiddish.

10:01 p.m. EST: Mordechai Ben David has made a special guest appearance at The Event, joining Lipa on stage in singing “Just One Shabbos.” The entire crowd is on their feet singing and clapping along.

10:06 p.m. EST: MBD has taken the stage by himself, singing “Daaga Minayin.”

10:10 p.m. EST: MBD is now singing “Yidden.”

10:15 p.m. EST: MBD has the crowd energized, singing in his inimitable leibedike fashion. You can have any seat in the house…because everyone’s standing…

10:22 p.m. EST: MBD is singing “Anachnu Maaminim Bnei Maaminim.” A large portion of the crowd has gathered in front of the stage and is dancing. Yossi Green, Yeedle, Yossie Piamenta and others are sitting right up front.

10:24 p.m. EST: Lipa is back on stage, singing “Rabbosai.” The security guards are cordoning off the dancing areas, but people are pulling the security guards into the circles to join in the dancing.”

  1. A siyum at a musical event like this- WHAT COULD BE A BIGGER KIDDUSH HASHEM?! Haflah vafeleh. That is beautiful.

  2. I am at the concert right now. It is 8:54 and it is very beautiful. Pirchei is singing very nice songs, golden oldies.
I just want to tell everyone that the crowd here is very interesting. For those who thought that yeshivaleit are coming, you were mistaken. There are many Modern Orthodox people in the crowd, some wearing jeans, other dressed in other attire. There are many chassidishe people too, more working-types. So as the post says, it is a mixed and diverse crowd, mostly not very yeshivish. So if anything, I think this music – which by the way is aidel and acceptable by all standards, can only have a positive affect on most of the people here… The guy sitting behind me is from Far rockaway and the guy to my left is from BP like me.
    regards from The Garden…

  3. okay, here’s my take. as chaim said, it was extremely professional. flawless – the videos, the music, the show.
Lipa was very toned down, batampt. maybe even to an extreme.
MBD took over the show. his appearance brought the house down, no question; Blew the place away.
He is still the king of Jewish music. the place was jammed, jammed, jammed.
    quite an event.
and i didn’t see or hear anything the entire night that was objectionable or questionable.

the videos for Rabbi teitelbaum were very touching.

the coordination between teh stage and the videos and evrything going on was unbeLIPApable, i mean unbelievable.

  4. I must give you credit. The way you performed no one can have any taanos, although you might of have gone a bit too extreme and toned it down a bit too much. Any reason why MBD was more lebidike than you?

  5. The show was very professional, weaving back and forth from the various videos and on stage performances. A bit too mild though for chodosh adar but i still had a very good time.

  6. The show was wonderful, a real kiddush Hashem.
Everyone was awestruck, it kept getting better and better.
Lipa is original, fabulous, a number one entertainer with a talent beyond compare. Sure MBD and the rest were great, but next to Lipa there was no comparison. MBD may have been the king, LIPA IS NUMBER ONE!
The show was 2009, very professional, very beautiful in every way!
Not a minute was wasted, and Lipa was there continuously.
When do tickets for Event II go on sale?????

  7. the event was very moving. all the videos they showed about the yidden in eretz yisrolel. Boruch chait and Abe Rotenberg were so hartzig. Lipa, you also made a real kidush hashem with that siyum getting 7,000 people to answer amen yehei shmei rabah and amen.

  8. It is very evident, that this “event” was planned in that it should have a Yidishe Taam. ( Lipa being toned down, a siyum, Rabbi Teitelbaum A”H etc)

Let us just see it for what it is. A concert/show, featuring today’s Jewish singers/performers.

  9. I fealt like i was by a rebbes tish. Lipa you had at least 30 bekertches on througout the night . Just the gaboyim arround you helping you change were non jewish.

  10. was the event originally supposed to be so toned down? I felt like i was at a modgister concert twenty years ago. but it still was very professional and entertaining.

  11. My wife told me their was a whole group of ladies sitting next to her wearing shpitzels on their heads. but they were jumping the whole time. they were more lebadik than lipa himself.

  12. i was there and i must say i was very impressed that it was very kovadik. i just wanted to know, wasn’t that yossi green singing, not abie rottenberg?

  13. WOW WEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
one of the best jewish concrts i’ve ever attended. HASC move over. Sheya Mendlowitz is back. better than ever!!!!!!!!!

  14. Dear Lipa, ly”t
Lipa you are an extremely talented individual who has inspired thousands upon thousands in Klall Yisroel. You will be able to be Mekarev a huge part of Klall Yisroel to our father in heaven and have a Zchus to speed up the arrival of Moshiach. Take an example from Uri Zohar and see how he turned around and was able to teach hundreds of thousands of Jews Hashems Torah. you are a true Ben Torah a Tzdik “an Erlicha Yid” as you have been referred to by some leaders.

  15. THE event WAS AMAZING, LIPA U ARE ONE OF A KIND. KEEP BEING MISAMAICH KLAL YISROEL UNTIL MOSHIACH AND THE REAL BIG EVENT THE SUDAS LEVIOUSON AMEN!!!!!!

  16. Congratulations to Matzav.com on getting the legal rights to take pictures inside the Garden and broadcast them on their website.

  17. Its amazing how so many people get swept away with music, as if this is why were put down on this world. There is a lot more to life other than idolizing people that have a nice voice. I wish people would have the same enthusiasm for more meaningful aspects of life. Please don’t get me wrong, I am not against the concept of a Kosher outlet for entertainment but quite frankly you people are taking it to an extreme . Please stop labeling it a “massive Kiddush Hashem ” and the best thing that was ever done for klal yisrael. Get a grip of yourselves and do some soul searching and you might discover that Hashem wants you to focus on more spirtitual aspects of life.

  18. maybe the biggist kidush hashem was that there weren’t many yeshivaleit and chassidishe yungeliet. they are the future of klal yisroel. chizku v’imtzu

  19. It’s interesting that so far almost all the comments are lamenting that there was to little Lipa and to much of the Heimishe stuff!!!. It just comes to show where people are standing, and what they want with Lipa and his music!.

  20. If I may I would like to suggest for all those who had a great time last night, a nice way to thank Hashem is to give some amount of time back to Hashem to say “THANK YOU HASHEM” BY LEARNING Hilchos Purim.

I am sure it will be a big Zechus for all Lipa fans and Am Yisroel. Lipa will be proud of all of us who will learn Torah, as a continuation from Lipa’s Siyum.

    Thank You.

  21. Baruch Hashem i think now we are ready for moshiach. The Rebbe taught us that good deeds bring the Moshiach. This is probably the biggest kiddush hashem since the sium hashas. It definatly is unbeLIPAble and the Rebbe is smileing at klall yisroel today. Shalom and kol tuv.

  22. LIPA i love you, you are my roll model, the concert was amazing it was the best it could ever be MDB you really made the event

  23. looking forward to a future concert with the real lipa. too toned down for a pre-purim concert. we still love lipa.!!!

  24. to those who where not there, dont feel sorry as you did not miss anything at all.

you did better as you saved yourself some money,

if you really like lipa, just go out and buy yourself a tape and listen to it again and again

Meanwhile good luck to all. look forward for the next big Lipa event. hope you could survive till the next one.

  25. Im amazed of this article and all the comments, why are you afraid to say the truth:

    1- too much pirchai

2- Rabbi chayit and acheinu weren’t necessary

    3 – too little lipa

4- bad voice for lipa the entire first set

5 – bad lighting on stage many times

6- a buntch of mic interruptions

lets be very honest and stop sugar coating it, this is THE EVENT are you kidding me? the

I went around the entire hall i can say that 65 -85 % were bored out of their minds shining flash lights and being rowdy just to have some entertainment. this was a bad concert and most of all not entertaining at all.

I am still a big lipa fan and it was almost uncomfortable to watch him bag the crowd at the end to get going.

over all i can give it is a c-

OK NEXT TIME IT WILL BE BITTER

  26. from the clips I’ve seen, I don’t see why anyone could have an objection to this event. It was all in good taste and heimish. (Of course there are those who don’t feel right about hearing any music until we have a Bais Hamikdosh again).

  27. Kvetch,
You must have been by a different LIPA event than everyone else. I think that you were at a Long Island Power Authority meeting that took place a few blocks away from the concert that everyone else was at and loved! Sorry you missed the show… maybe next year use your GPS!

  28. Mr. “curious”: I actually liked your observation, you said it really well, my statement was a sarcastic echo of all the mekadshei Hashem who must have seen the Shechina itself last night in MSG…

  29. I’m sure the concert was very nice, but this minute by minute breakdown is overkill and a little tasteless.

  30. If you want to report about Kiddush Hash-m from last night, how about the thousands of people who attended the Long Beach, Edison, Springfield, Ohel Torah, Philadelphia, Scranton yeshiva dinners, and not to mention the S.C.H.I. Dinner in Lakewood.

  31. Matzav,
I must say that I was a little disturbed that you posted all of the comments about the event, especially from “kvetch.” I enjoy looking at this website bc of its vigilance in keeping to shmiras halashon but I was surprised that you posted all of the comments from people who had problems with the event. I was actually there myself and do have my own opinions of the night but please keep the lashon harah to a minimum

  32. I completely agree with Tanna Kamah, and i’m also sure that everyone felt the Shechina resting on MSG, and now has Ruach Hakodesh (please excuse the dripping sarcasm).

  33. i love having such friendly and simchediga neighbor , hashem should help only oif simchas in our neighborhood

  34. it was the most geshmake concert ever (he has been much more leibedick in the past but im shure that will get better with time

  35. Can anyone explain to me why the Pirchei Choir can’t sing without a vocal track playing along (with the exception of the soloists)?
I dunno, but in my book, that’s ganeivas da’as (and, yes, I know for a fact that it happened.
I mean, c’mon! Are they that unprofessional that they must lip-sync?
