Liz Cheney, a former member of the January 6 Committee, responded on Monday to allegations of destroying 117 files from the panel’s investigation, asserting that she should not face imprisonment over the accusations.

President-elect Donald Trump had accused the committee members on Sunday of erasing evidence that he claimed would have cleared him of any wrongdoing.

The allegation followed a statement by Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA), who oversaw the House Administration Committee’s investigation. In January, Loudermilk revealed that forensic investigators discovered 117 missing files, which he alleged were either deleted or encrypted by committee members.

“It’s clear that [the J6 committee] went to significant lengths to prevent the American public from accessing certain documents produced during their investigation,” Loudermilk told Fox News. “It also appears that Bennie Thompson and Liz Cheney deliberately failed to preserve critical information and videos, as required by House rules, effectively obstructing our Subcommittee.”

During an interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, Trump called for the committee members to be jailed for their actions.

“Cheney did something that’s inexcusable, along with Thompson and the people on the un-select committee of political thugs and, you know, creeps,” Trump said, referring to the panel’s chair, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS). “They deleted and destroyed all evidence.”

“Just remember, the unselect committee – a year and a half of sworn testimony, and after getting all of the testimony, they deleted it, wait, and they destroyed almost everything,” Trump elaborated. “There’s nothing left. It’s unprecedented, and they deny you do that. In a civil case, you go to jail.”

Cheney, who left Congress after losing her re-election bid, countered Trump’s claims, stating, “Trump’s suggestion that members of Congress who later investigated his illegal and unconstitutional actions should be jailed is a continuation of his assault on the rule of law and the foundations of our republic,” as reported by the New York Times.

“Donald Trump knows his claims about the select committee are ridiculous and false, as has been detailed extensively, including by Chairman Thompson,” Cheney continued.

She further argued, “There is no conceivably appropriate factual or constitutional basis for what Donald Trump is suggesting — a Justice Department investigation of the work of a congressional committee — and any lawyer who attempts to pursue that course would quickly find themselves engaged in sanctionable conduct.”

Trump floated the idea of President Joe Biden issuing preemptive pardons for Cheney and other committee members. The suggestion aligns with calls from some Democrats and media figures urging Biden to intervene. “Biden can give them a pardon if he wants to,” Trump told NBC’s Kristen Welker. “And maybe he should.”

Welker pressed Trump further: “So you think Liz Cheney should go to jail?”

“Anybody who voted in favor –” Trump started to reply before being interrupted.

“Are you going to direct your FBI director and your attorney general to send them to jail?” Welker asked again.

“Not at all,” Trump responded. “I think that they’ll have to look at that. … They can do whatever they want.”

  1. Liz Cheney is an example of the weaponization of Congress. Some examples of this include Nadler, Schiff, Waters, and lots more Dems. I vote against jailing them. I prefer to gawk at the disgrace they will suffer when we all see them exposed.

    • Trump is the rat here. He brought it all on himself, and now he wants to arrest the rat catchers.

So many naive and downright dumb people support him.

      Beyond comprehension .

  2. Bennie Thompson is an old criminal for many years. He hides behind the race card. Merrick Garland looked the other way, because of his skin color.
