A tragic incident unfolded on Thursday morning near the Maccabim Checkpoint, resulting in the loss of 20-year-old IDF soldier Sergeant Maksym Molchanov’s life due to a terror ramming attack.
Sergeant Molchanov had relocated from Ukraine to Herzliya and was an active combat soldier in the 282nd Brigade. In a tribute to his dedication, he was promoted posthumously from Corporal to Sergeant.
The soldier’s family has been informed of the devastating news. The IDF released a statement extending their heartfelt condolences to the family, emphasizing their commitment to offering continued support.
President Isaac Herzog conveyed his condolences, expressing, “In the name of the people of Israel, I extend my deepest sympathies to the family of the late Maxim Molchanov, the IDF soldier who tragically lost his life this morning in an attack at the Maccabim checkpoint. Maxim, a lone soldier, journeyed from Ukraine to enlist in the IDF and contribute to Israel’s security. I also wish a swift recovery to those injured in the attack and extend my solidarity to the swift and resolute actions taken by the security forces to neutralize the reprehensible terrorist.”
Major General (Res.) Doron Almog, Chairman of the Executive of The Jewish Agency For Israel, conveyed his sentiments, stating, “Today’s tragic attack near Modiin claimed the life of IDF soldier Cpl. Maksym Molchanov, who, with the support of The Jewish Agency, arrived in Israel at the age of 14. Max was a student at our Hadassah Neurim Youth Village. He intertwined his fate with Israel’s and made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the country. Just six months ago, Max exemplified a profound act of kindness by donating bone marrow to a 12-year-old. His story embodies the courage and dedication of young individuals who hold a deep sense of purpose and love for the only Jewish state in the world.”
Almog concluded with empathy for Molchanov’s parents in Ukraine and the assurance that The Jewish Agency would provide support to the family during this grievous time.
Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel Yevgen Korniychuk conveyed his nation’s sorrow, saying, “The Embassy of Ukraine in Israel expresses its condolences to the family of the soldier, born in Ukraine, who immigrated to Israel out of a sense of mission and affection for the nation. We share in the family’s pain and grief. May both the Israeli and Ukrainian communities find peace and tranquility, free from the anguish that has marked this moment.”
In response to the incident, IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi visited the site of the ramming attack, accompanied by high-ranking commanders. An initial inquiry was initiated by the Chief of the General Staff, focusing on the incident that led to the tragic loss of life and injuries to three other soldiers. The inquiry included assessments of countermeasures and defense strategies in the region.
The Chief of the General Staff acknowledged the need for heightened countermeasures in Judea and Samaria and affirmed that lessons from the initial inquiry would be swiftly incorporated into operational adjustments.
