Negotiations between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Education Minister Naftali Bennett over the latter’s demand to take over the defense ministry portfolio broke down on Friday, effectively bringing Israel closer to early elections.

Netanyahu’s Likud party sent out a statement on Friday following the meeting with Bennett, saying the prime minister hopes to preserve the right wing government, and that he will take over the defense ministry portfolio until further notice.

The statement also stressed the importance of not repeating “the mistake of 1992”, when a right wing government called for early elections due to disagreements in the coalition, leading to the election of a left wing party with Yitzhak Rabin as Prime Minister.
