French President Emmanuel Macron has issued another sharp critique of Israel, suggesting that its continued military campaign in Gaza may be violating international humanitarian law, according to a report from Anadolu.
During a joint press briefing in Paris alongside newly instated German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Macron emphasized the deepening crisis in Gaza. He declared, “ignoring humanitarian law and maintaining the situation in Gaza is not acceptable.”
He drew attention to the disparity in global reactions to different conflicts, saying, “We cannot have double standards. We stand for the right of the Ukrainian people to sovereignty. We must do the same when it comes to Gaza.”
With conditions in the Gaza Strip deteriorating, Macron stated that aid deliveries had been effectively stopped since March. He accused Israel of contributing to a worsening emergency.
“We’ve entered a phase where the wounded cannot be evacuated, and where people are cut off from food and medicine. This is the worst humanitarian situation Gaza has faced since the beginning of the war,” he charged.
Macron pushed for renewed political talks, arguing that any future arrangement must provide for both a sovereign Palestinian state and guaranteed security for Israel.
“Never have so many civilians been so long without access to food, medicine, or medical evacuation,” Macron added, again urging the release of hostages as part of a comprehensive peace strategy.
His remarks follow Israel’s recent efforts to set up a controlled humanitarian corridor in Rafah, where aid can be distributed under Israeli military supervision. Only civilians who pass stringent checks will be allowed into the designated area.
This system was introduced after reports emerged that Hamas had been seizing humanitarian supplies intended for civilians—a concern highlighted by US President Donald Trump earlier this week.
Macron’s latest remarks continue a pattern of vocal opposition to Israel’s actions in Gaza since Hamas launched its brutal October 7, 2023, attack on Israeli civilians in the south.
He has previously advocated for halting weapons sales to Israel, stating that “stopping the export of weapons” used in operations in Gaza and Lebanon is the only viable path to curbing hostilities with Hamas and Hezbollah.
