Mel Mermelstein, a Holocaust survivor who proved that the Auschwitz gassings were historical fact, passed away in Long Beach, California, at the age of 95.

In 1979, when the Holocaust-denying Institute for Historical Review organization offered $50,000 to whoever could prove that Jews were gassed at Auschwitz, Mermelstein provided proof with documents, photographs, testimonies of inmates — including his mother and two sisters — being gassed, and an empty container of Zyklon B.

After the institute ignored him, he sued.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Thomas T. Johnson awarded him $90,000, saying that “the fact that Jews were gassed to death… is not reasonably subject to dispute. And it is capable of immediate and accurate determination by resort to sources of reasonably indisputable accuracy. It is simply a fact.”
