Maran Rav Shteinman: Late Friday Learning Seder Is Insensitive to Wives

rav-aharon-leib-shteinmanIn light of the many challenges facing Klal Yisroel, gedolim have called for an increase in limud haTorah. Specifically, Maran Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman, rabbon shel Yisroel, has called for a chizuk in learning on Fridays, when, in some instances, there is a slackening off. In fact, Rav Osher Arielli of Yeshivas Mir Yerushalayim has said that he will begin delivering his shiur on Fridays as well in order to be mechazeik the learning of his talmidim.

Maran Rav Aharon Leib Steinman was joined by Maran Rav Chaim Kanievsky in a letter which called for “stronger and increased Torah study continuously.”

Among the various initiatives that have been put forth are sedorim on Friday and throughout Shabbos.

One such seder is held late on Friday, shortly before hadlokas neiros. That seder, however, did not receive the support of Maran Rav Aharon Leib. In fact, Rav Shteinman was critical of it and said that it demonstrates a lack of sensitivity to neshei chayil.

“The time before hadlokas neiros is one of the most hectic times in a home the entire week. It is cruel to leave one’s wife alone at the time to take care of the home and the children.

“Those who want to learn then and whose wives support them, may they be blessed. But an official seder at that time should not be established. If someone really wants to learn then, he can think in learning.”

  1. I agree %100. My wife works very hard running the home & my help is needed every day but especialy on Erev Shabbos.

  2. AMEN… can we also dedicate Shabbos day to the kinderlach who want to spend time with Tatty, Abba and Daddy.

  3. Where is the insensitivity to their wives? i live in the center of flatbush and can testify that nearly none of these wives have jobs. i see them walking with strollers or without strollers of all ages just enjoying a free life spending their day with their other female friends.not one has a job. ever walk up avenue j on a monday afternoon? its filled with ‘wives’ talking on phones and being with friends have fun. where are the real wives that work just like their hard working innocent husbands? is this a new crisis in our communities?

  4. Thats a Godol’s way of thinking and is consistent with similar expression’s from R’ Shteinman.

However I’d love to see where he said it, recording, or letter etc.

  5. To comment #8: u don’t know if those woman are working the other half of the day, or had their day off that day, or. If they were up most of the night with one or 2 crying or not feeling well kids… but she can’t go back to sleep after exhaustingly sending her older kids to school, so good for her for for packing up her kids to taking them along with her to do her errands or to to take them for a stroll instead of hiring a babysitter while she goes out herself, which isnt wrong either… be happy for her, a mother works quite hard w/o an outside job, just as hard as a man does & sometimes even more, depending on circumstances how hashem had it arranged. Why r u so jealous that the gadol hador was sensitive to the wives that work so hard to prepare a nice shabbos? (I pity whoever is married to u, if u r still married…)
