Marion Barry Dies at 78

marion-barry1Marion Barry Jr., the mayor of Washington, D.C, died around midnight at the age of 78. Barry was elected to the post four times, and also served on the D.C. Council for 15 years, was nicknamed “Mayor for Life.” He was married four times, and his troubles with drug addiction would make him famous as the mayor who smoked crack long before Rob Ford.

In 1990 he was caught on FBI tape smoking crack, and was later convicted on cocaine possession. Upon being released, Barry was elected as mayor for one more term.

While a cause of death has not been released, in his later years Barry struggled with health issues, and in 2014 he released a memoir. Read more at the Washington Post.
