Lakewood, NJ — A disturbing series of thefts has left local families reeling as reports emerge that over $100,000 in SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits have been stolen from the accounts of residents in the area.
The thefts, which have been occurring over the past few days, are believed to be the result of a sophisticated card skimming operation linked to a local kosher food store.
According to multiple sources, the store involved has been identified, and its owner is reportedly aware of the situation and is cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation.
While details are still unfolding, it appears that the skimming scheme has been extensive, impacting a large number of families in the community. Those affected have found that their food stamps accounts have been drained of their funds, with the stolen amounts reaching staggering sums.
The discovery of the thefts has sent shockwaves through Lakewood’s frum community, especially given the widespread nature of the issue. Families who rely on SNAP benefits to make ends meet have been left without resources, and many are now scrambling to take action to protect their remaining funds. Local authorities are investigating the matter, but there are growing concerns that this could be a larger, more organized scam.
One critical piece of information complicating the situation is a recent change in federal law that could leave victims without any means of recourse. On December 21, 2024, President Joe Biden signed the American Relief Act, 2025 (PL 118-158) into law, a piece of legislation that cancels the replacement of stolen SNAP benefits due to fraud. As a result, SNAP recipients who fall victim to card skimming or similar fraudulent activities after the law’s enactment will not be able to receive federal reimbursement for their stolen funds.
While states have the option to replace stolen benefits using their own funds, there is no guarantee that these replacements will be reimbursed by the federal government. This leaves many families in a vulnerable position, as they face the potential loss of crucial resources with no assurance that the government will step in to help.
In light of the thefts, local residents have been urged to take immediate steps to protect their SNAP benefits. Experts recommend that anyone affected change their PIN codes for their EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) cards to ensure their accounts are secured. Additionally, those using the EBT Connect app are advised to take advantage of its features, including the ability to lock their cards. This would allow users to unlock their cards only when necessary, and then relock them immediately afterward to prevent further unauthorized transactions.
As the investigation unfolds, it is clear that vigilance and proactive measures will be critical for SNAP recipients going forward. Residents are urged to take the necessary steps to safeguard their accounts and monitor their balances closely.

OMG, in the ear hatayra! I really hope it was not an inside job.
I’m ok . I just used tainted cash.
It shouldn’t be very difficult to find the culprit. Some Mexican grocery somewhere is deliberately cashing it out. If you look at your last transactions it says where it was last spent. That store will ave trasactions of thousands of dollars without losing any inventory.
Not sure who did the skimming but the grocery is definitely complicit.
Actually it’s been going on nationwide for quite some time. It’s a professional hacking crew. They are stealing funds sometimes moments after it gets loaded onto the card. Some times the charges are done in other parts of the country.
Apparently you very little knowledge on this subject. This has been going on nationwide for quite some time. People cards are emptied within hours of the monthly stipend being filled. This is professional hackers.
Extremely helpful article. Now everyone knows exactly what to do.
i dont understand… The guys gets many peoples card numbers and then to get the actual money he needs to spend it, usually in a store of his accomplice. So why isnt anyone investigating where the money ended up?

Has the musk said that these programs are over? I hope knot.
This has nothing to do with any local store. This was a system-wide hacking scheme in multiple states through the back end of the program. Wasnt done in-store
Its a national federal investigation. Get the facts straight
Finally, someone with knowledge on the subject.
NJ ConnectEBT does not, yet, have the option to lock your card. The website says that it is a feature that will be available in the future.
