Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) has stepped down from his congressional role following his nomination by President-elect Donald Trump to be the next Attorney General.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) made the announcement, confirming that Gaetz’s resignation took effect “immediately” and that a special election will be arranged to fill his seat.
Johnson clarified that Gaetz’s decision to leave was in accordance with a state law allowing an “8-week period to select and fill a vacant seat.”
“If you start the clock now, if you do the math, we may be able to fill that seat as early as Jan. 3 when we take the new oath of office for the new Congress,” Johnson explained regarding Gaetz’s choice to resign.
“He’s a reformer in his mind and heart, and I think he’ll bring a lot to the table on that,” Johnson added.
Trump officially put forward Gaetz as his choice to lead the Department of Justice on Wednesday afternoon.
“Few issues in America are more important than ending the partisan Weaponization of our Justice System. Matt will end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations and restore Americans’ badly-shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department,” Trump stated.
He continued, “On the House Judiciary Committee, which performs oversight of DOJ, Matt played a key role in defeating the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, and exposing alarming and systemic Government Corruption and Weaponization.”
Gaetz shook up Capitol Hill in 2023 when he introduced a motion to remove then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a move that succeeded and led to the California Republican’s ouster from the Speaker’s role.
Trump’s nomination of Gaetz for the Attorney General position on Wednesday will now proceed to the U.S. Senate for confirmation.
“Few issues in America are more important than ending the partisan Weaponization of our Justice System. Matt will end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations and restore Americans’ badly-shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department,” Trump stated.
He added, “On the House Judiciary Committee, which performs oversight of DOJ, Matt played a key role in defeating the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, and exposing alarming and systemic Government Corruption and Weaponization.”

After appointing so many people who are pro Israel, Trump balances it out by appointing a know anti-Semite.
I have no understanding as to why he resigned from Congress before being confirmed. I know he said it’s because this way the governor can appoint a new Congress person but what happens if he doesn’t get confirmed by the Senate? He has a lot of enemies, a lot a lot a lot of enemies, skip the dumbocrats because they are the enemies of the country, but he has enemies on the Republican side.
In the back of my mind I wonder if there’s some other reason that he really resigned and this was a saving face type of way to do it although I don’t know why President Trump would go along with it unless the president feels that he owes him one.
Trump and RFK are looking for leaders to join the future Trump administration.
President Donald J Trump, Robert F Kennedy Jr, and their unity coalition need *your* help nominating people of integrity and courage for over 4,000 appointments across the future Trump Administration. Unlike the backroom deals of past presidents, the MAGA/MAHA transition team will draw directly from the input of we, the people, via the new Nominees for the People site.

You are omitting the reports that the pick is considered ridiculous even by many Republicans.
The truth is, the whole thing is a ploy. Gaetz is under investigation for despicable things, and he has admitted to everything besides the illegal stuff. He ‘resigned’ due to his appointment, which will never happen, so the investigation against him is closed. Otherwise, why did he rush to resign?
Agree.
