Matzav Inbox: The Foolishness of the “He Hates Israel, Not Jews” Argument

Dear Matzav Inbox,

There’s a line being tossed around lately that’s as dishonest as it is dangerous — that Muslim socialist Zohran Mamdani is “not anti-Jewish,” only “anti-Israel.” Some in the Satmar community have even used that absurd excuse to justify endorsing him.

Let’s be clear: When someone openly supports those who chant “globalize the intifada,” refuses to condemn a call for Jewish blood, and embraces a worldview that paints Israel — and by extension the Jewish people — as evil oppressors, that person isn’t just “anti-Israel.” They’re an oyev Yisroel.

If you hate Jews who live in Israel, if you defend terrorists who murder them, if you side with those who glorify intifada and jihad, then you hate Jews, period. There’s no separating the two.

To pretend that you can despise the Jewish homeland while loving its people is a moral contortion that fools no one — except those desperate to justify a political misstep.

Supporting someone who stands with our enemies doesn’t make you principled or nuanced. It makes you blind.

The blood spilled in Israel is no different from the blood spilled in Brooklyn or Monroe or anywhere else Jews live. To claim otherwise is to abandon the most basic sense of achdus Yisroel.

Those who make excuses for a man who champions our enemies should be ashamed of themselves. When you endorse a voice that fans the flames of hatred, you don’t just endanger Jews in Israel. You endanger Jews everywhere.

Sincerely,
G. H.

Boro Park, Brooklyn

  1. It is told that the Satmar Rebbe, Rav Yoel, did not endorse a certain candidate running for mayor due to his anti-Israel stance. So, his chasidim asked him, “But Rebbe, you, too, are anti-Israel?” To which he responded, “When a gentile is anti-Israel, it is because he hates Jews. When I am anti-Israel, it is because I love Jews.” Zohran Mamdani is certainly no lover of Jews.

    • This is a myth. He actually held that it is a great mitzvah to tell the gentiles that the Jews are not responsible for anything Israel does or does not do.

As a matter of fact, there is zero logic to claim that any gentile opposed to Israel is automatically a Jew-hater. Zero. It is certainly a possibility, but not at all a guarantee.

    • This is a very important story and very characteristic of the Satmar Rebbe, who was a tremendous oheiv Yisrael.
I hadn’t heard it before. Thank you for sharing it.

    • And we all know it’s true.
The goyim hate Israel because they sympathize with Arabs complaints (including fabricated complaints) and Arab terror.
The ones who are pro-Israel generally (but not always) identify with the corrupt anti-Torah values of the leadership, like toeva freedom, hefkerus between men and women, venues open on Shabbos, and so on.
I resent the Erev Rav Zionist leaders because I love Am Yisrael and respect the kedushah of Eretz Yisrael (where I reside), and I see how much harm the Erev Rav leaders cause.

  2. Okay let’s break this down. I Am pro Israel and I am an orthodox Jew and I despise anti-Semitism and I despise antiZionism pretty much any hatred that is not condoned by the torah. That being said just because to us anyone who hates Israel and calls for its destruction by extension also hates Jews, that doesn’t mean that’s true from someone on the other side of the wall. They can hate all Jews who live in Israel and not hate those Jews who do not live in israel. That is completely logical. You don’t have to just get upset at someone because your worldview clashes with their worldview. If you’re going to have a discussion with someone, assuming you want to, you have to understand their side and their argument. You clearly don’t.

  3. The article is about how he hates Jews and not just Israel. Yet you wrote “and embraces a worldview that paints Israel — and by extension the Jewish people” as a proof he hates Jews. You literally added in and by extension the Jewish people without any proof in an article that’s trying to bring proofs that he hates both. I do not disagree with your main points but I think the article was weak in trying to change people’s minds.

    • If you have to choose one of the two radical ideologies as to which one can easily be labled open anti-semitism, i would choose the extreme right. pretending otherwise, is living in denial. for some reason, all the blind Trump lovers in our community want to pretend that from now on, all their friends are on the right, a party that’s filled with Nazies, racists, and conspiracy theorists, a party that refuses to condemn the Heritage Foundation for defending Tucker Carlson and his disgusting gaslighting of sick Nick Fuentes, a Hitler admirer, and open antisemite. we should be spending all our energy on electing Democrat politicians, a party that has always loved the Jewish people – as they do to every minority, and no! Zorhan Mamdani is not an antisemite, he is anti iarael, any New York politcian knows that the ortodox community in Brooklyn has nothing to do with the Zionists and theit Hisgarus Beumos, and therefor we have no proof that Mr. Mamdani hates the Jewish people, unlike Curtis Sliwa, who has said in the past very antisemitic things, and his Republican party, that is growing increasingly more radically antisemitic, and if you think that it’s only a few political commentators on X, just take a look at our beloved Vice President, who is almost clearly the future of the Republican Party and the presidential nominee in 2028, and refuses to disasociate himself from people who say that jews are in control of the world and should be thrown out of the country, deny the Holocaust, admire Hitler, blame Israel for the death of Charley Kirk and for everything else they don’t like.
It’s a good thing the State of Israel wasn’t established prior to the Holocaust, because everyone would defend him by saying that he hates Israel not the Jews.
The key is always that you have to look at the spirit behind the word, which ideology drives them to say what they say, and in the case of Mr. Mamdani it is all a left-wing belief system that certain minorities have been left behind, including Palestinians that have been killed in the thousands by the IDF, which i don’t think it’s true but it’s still not driven by hatred of jews, rather from a total different place, and we all know that because he uses the same ammount of energy when discussing politics regarding Muslims in NYC, that have supposedly also been left behind, something that has nothing to do with jews. Unlike the antisemites on the right that our driven by a belief system that they are the cleanest and finest people because they are white Christians and the Jews who came from Europe are infiltrating politics and American society with their dirty agendas, and are therefor in charge for everything wrong the goverment does
