bloombergNew York – Mayor Michael Bloomberg is putting his money where his mouth is.

The Billionaire mayor has donated $250,000 to help support same-gender marriage in Maryland.

In March 2012, a bill to legalize same-gender marriage was signed into law by Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, making Maryland the eighth state in the U.S. to recognize same-gender marriage.

On Friday, Bloomberg posted the following note on the Web site Marylanders For Marriage Equality:

Friend –

Maryland will always hold a special place in my heart. I went to college at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, and have remained active in the Hopkins community. So when Governor O’Malley asked me to support Question 6, I didn’t hesitate. As a business leader and Mayor of New York City, I do not believe that government has any business telling one class of couples that they cannot marry. The 14th Amendment guarantees us all equal protection under the law, and that’s what Question 6 does – it treats all citizens equally under the law, while protecting religious liberty at the same time.

Two years ago, I was proud to support the effort to pass marriage equality in the State of New York – and the bi-partisan support it received resulted in one of our state’s great civil rights victories. Around the country, a few legislatures and state courts have taken action to extend marriage equality to all couples, regardless of gender. But never before have voters affirmed marriage equality in a statewide referendum. By voting “FOR” on Question 6, I believe Maryland will become the first state in the nation to affirm marriage equality at the ballot box.

On Tuesday, November 6th – Election Day – you will have an opportunity to make history. The next great barrier to full equality under the law is marriage equality. There is no doubt in my mind this barrier will fall, just as so many others have. The question is not if, but when. And it is my hope that you will answer that question for Maryland on Tuesday, November 6th.

Please join me and support Question 6.

The Mayor also tweeted a few messages on Twitter including, “I’m proud to contribute $250,000 in support of #marriage equality in Maryland: http://bit.ly/QpKmb3 cc: @MD4Equality #VoteFor6”

If the referendum passes, Maryland will become the first state to affirm same-gender marriage at the polls.

  1. same gender marriage is the only forbidden relationship written out explicitly in the torah, intrestigly enough that is what our medina is trying to make specifically legal… food for thought

  2. HKB”H gave him wealth & this is what he’s using it for???! This is a terrible Chillul Hashem! David Hamelech says: those who hate you Hashem, I hate. I hate Mayor Mike Bloomberg! If only the Frum politicians would STOP being Michaneff him! Seperate yourselves from this Rasha!

  3. It is a huge chilul hashem that a prominent jewish polotician can support so openly one of the worst aveiros in the torah.Similarly, On Baltimores Park Heights Ave (one of the main streets) there are two large reform temples across the street from each other. Both of them sport large signs on their front lawns which says “WE SUPPORT MARRIGE EQUALITY VOTE YES FOR QUESTION SIX” Question six is the referendum whether to impliment this bill which was already past by the Maryland legislature. When people start to think that aveiros are mitzvos they cannot possibly be further assimilated.

  4. Mr. Mayor you’ve lost all respect in the Torah Jews Eyes, opposing the fundamentals of Judiasm and causing tens of thousands to sink to the lowest levels of humanity.
Once again you’re fighting Judiasm for the sake of Liberal attention. When a Jew goes astray the Torah becomes his basis for opposition. The Torah always stands up for itself, Heaven help its opposers to repent before it’s too late.

  5. 1) I think comment #1 is excessive. I would prefer something like ???? ???? ?? ????. He is someone who is ignorant of true Yiddishkeit.

    2) I would like to see our ‘machers’ stop flattering and giving kavod to the man, as happened a few weeks ago in Boro Park.

  6. The frum community supported Bloomberg overwhelmingly — 70 to 90% margins — in his three elections, two of which were after he had announced his public support of SSM.

  7. he is an assimilated Jew. Jews should have helped reach his family when he was young. We sit and expect someone to conduct themselves in our beliefs when they were raised by Jews who did not hold tightly to them. what do we expect? This is golus and we missed out. Kiruv and Ahavas Yisroel are so vital, we missed out.

  8. Chashi, I don’t hate him. At least that’s not my initial emotion. My first is to feel profoundly, profoundly sorry for him. What a waste of potential. What a game changer he could have been. After 120 he could have been a neighbor to the likes of a R’ Wolfson, zt”l, having designed the ultimate and only true luxury home….

  9. Is Maryland same gender “marriage” going to require a consent form indicating they realize how dangerous such a life style is?

  10. We should all remember that frum organizations honored this bum at their dinner a few years ago. When money is involved, our values don’t mean a thing!
