House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) stated that he believes the House GOP’s investigations into the foreign business activities of President Biden’s family could escalate to the level of an impeachment inquiry. McCarthy highlighted Biden’s previous claims that he never discussed business with his family and that they never received money from China, which the investigations have contradicted.
“When Biden was running for office, he told the public he has never talked about business. He said his family has never received a dollar from China, which we prove is not true,” McCarthy told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Monday night, referencing Biden’s previous statements that he did not talk to his son Hunter Biden about his foreign business activities.
Referring to allegations made by two IRS whistleblowers regarding Hunter Biden’s tax crimes, as well as findings that millions of foreign funds flowed through shell companies to Biden family members and associates, McCarthy asserted that the information they’ve uncovered justifies a stronger investigation.
“We’ve only followed where the information has taken us. But Hannity, this is rising to the level of impeachment inquiry, which provides Congress the strongest power to get the rest of the knowledge and information needed,” McCarthy said.
“Because this president has also used something we have not seen since Richard Nixon: Use the weaponization of government to benefit his family and deny Congress the ability to have the oversight,” McCarthy said.
In response to McCarthy’s statements, the White House accused House Republicans of neglecting important issues and prioritizing unfounded attacks on the President.
“Instead of focusing on the real issues Americans want us to address like continuing to lower inflation or create jobs, this is what the @HouseGOP wants to prioritize. Their eagerness to go after @POTUS regardless of the truth is seemingly bottomless,” Ian Sams, White House spokesperson for oversight and investigations, said in a tweet.
The possibility of an impeachment inquiry comes amid recent disclosures regarding Hunter Biden’s work with Ukrainian energy company Burisma, and the report that a former associate plans to share information about the involvement of then-Vice President Biden in meetings with foreign business partners.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a briefing on Monday that the president was never in business with his son.
“If they really ran it for foreign countries, why didn’t you get money from France, from Germany, from U.K.? Why is it China, Romania, these countries that have real challenges and had problems going through,” McCarthy said on Fox News.
“I believe we will follow this all the way to the end, and this is going to rise to an impeachment inquiry, the way the Constitution tells us to do this, and we have to get the answers to these questions,” McCarthy said.
While McCarthy didn’t rely on the unverified allegations for an impeachment inquiry, the revelations have fueled Republican skepticism regarding the Biden family’s foreign business dealings. A poll conducted by Morning Consult found that a portion of registered voters across party lines viewed investigations into Biden and potential impeachment as a “top priority” for Congress.
McCarthy had previously suggested an impeachment inquiry into Attorney General Merrick Garland based on discrepancies in IRS whistleblower statements. He now believes that further investigation is necessary to address the questions surrounding the Biden family’s financial dealings with foreign entities.
