Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell’s public criticism of former President Trump over the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol is revealing sharp divisions within the party as Republicans shift into the Biden era.
The Kentucky senator, who has said he remains undecided on the question of convicting Trump, is once again the most powerful Republican in Washington, and his maneuvering on the impeachment trial is reverberating through the GOP.
But his remarks about Trump are also sparking backlash from some of his colleagues and leading conservative media commentators just as he’s trying to navigate the Republican Party through a tumultuous transition.
“What we need right now is for Sen. McConnell to unequivocally say that the second impeachment of Donald Trump after he leaves office is not only unconstitutional, it is bad for the country, and stand up and fight back,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said during an interview with Fox News.
Graham credited McConnell for his work on judicial nominations and said he “really helped” Trump, but “I’m asking Republican leaders in the Senate to lead.”

He MUST pack his bags.. He is not a legitimate voice for the GOP at this point. He has betrayed the voters with his reactions to his disagreements to trump. GOP voters deserve an honest voice. He has got to go… If someone is incapable of remembering that everything that happened even the capitol breech was a ploy by the left to distrupt, destruct and ruin Trumps chances then they cannot be in a leadership against liberals in this day and age. You need to focus, remember, be quick and always connect the dots. You cant be classy or too forgiving. You have to believe in God but remember god wants everyone to also act smart and not passive. I learnt that ACB and Kavanaugh in addition to PEnce and other conservative forgiving religious voices; that what I used to see as a strength. By not fighting back, by not being offensive, by allowing the abuse to go on has in 2020 become a simple weaknesss. That path doesn’t work with liberals any longer and all of them have got to go. They don’t have what it takes to fight back against the liberal/dem threat of destroying the world!!!!!!!!!!!
Love the Republicans trying to commit political suicide.
Funny, you didn’t say that about Pelosi, when the democrats tried to oust her from her position.
McConnel deserves the boot!
He thinks he can sweet talk the democrats to work with him…
No chance!
McConnell is the poster child for the deep state swamp. He allowed the Dems to put the mail in vote provision in the first stimulus, then did nothing to ensure voter integrity. He wanted Trump out, he wasn’t part of the swamp, he had to go. Hopefully the Repugnants won’t vote him minority leader. But they’re spineless and McConnell will retain his position.
