Major international news outlets either had slanted coverage of or virtually ignored the murder of an Israeli woman on Sunday, a media-monitoring group said on Monday.
HonestReporting, a watchdog group whose self-described mission is “defending Israel from media bias,” provided a number of examples to back up its claim, first pointing to those outlets that did, in fact, mention the stabbing attack against 38-year-old Dafna Meir at her house in Otniel, in Judea and Samaria.
The International Business Times (IBT), for instance, headlined the story of the terrorist attack, which was witnessed by the victim’s 17-year-old daughter: “Massive manhunt as Jewish woman stabbed to death by ‘Palestinian’ in her settlement home.”
HonestReporting challenged the placement of quotation marks around the word “Palestinian.”
Another headline with which the watchdog took issue appeared on BBC News: “Israeli woman stabbed to death in settlement home,” it read.
Even worse, according to HonestReporting, was the short headline attached to the tiny item on the BBC’s Middle East homepage: “Israeli killed in settlement home.”
Emphasizing that the brutal stabbing took place in an Israeli settlement in the West Bank, said HonestReporting, was a way of justifying the attack and minimizing Palestinian culpability – particularly since “the BBC’s coverage included virtually no prominent details about the murder itself.”
However, HonestReporting added, the IBT and BBC at least paid some attention to the incident, unlike those media outlets that had yet to cover it at all by the following day – “include[ing] the Wall Street Journal, CNN,NPR, The Times of London, Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The Australian and Sydney Morning Herald.”
HonestReporting also criticized additional media outlets as follows:
Continuing the theme of Palestinian victim-hood at the hands of Israel, The Independent included the terrorist attack in two sentences of the 15th paragraph, as an afterthought to a story of Palestinian communities uniting against Israeli demolitions of terrorists’ homes.
As for other coverage, Reuters, in contrast to the Associated Press and AFP wire services, didn’t even bother to publish a stand-alone story on the terrorist attack, instead referring to it as “the latest incident” in what amounted to a roundup of events.
