The Chief Rabbinate of Israel announced new, stricter rules for importers of meat from overseas. These primarily aim at lessening the dependency of shochtim and mashgichim on any particular company by limiting the time an importer can employ them to two shechitah seasons of a few months in duration.

The Chief Rabbinate is planning to introduce a national mehadrin standard for imported meat with strict rules which will apply to existing badatzim (chareidi hechsheirim) as well. Setting up such a body might result in the rabbinate directly competing with badatzim, but this would depend upon the rabbinate gaining the chareidi public’s trust.
