Colorado Gov. Jared Polis will reduce a trucker’s 110-year prison sentence after a national outcry led to prosecutors urging the prison term be reduced, KUSA reports. Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, 26, will now serve 10 years for vehicular manslaughter after his brakes failed along a Denver highway in 2019, leading to four deaths. Polis’ decision was made in consultation with some of the victims’ families, according to KUSA.
The state-mandated sentence, given to Aguilera-Mederos last week, caused a firestorm on social media, prompting a petition signed by more than 5 million people and calls from prosecutors and reality star Kim Kardashian urging the court to reconsider it. Aguilera-Mederos’ lawyers had applied for clemency from the governor’s office shortly after the sentencing hearing.

he deserves even less than that. His brakes were malfunctioning; yes its sad that 4 pple lost their lives but in cases like these its a higher power that clearly wanted this.
Why weren’t the owners of the truck arrested and prosecuted? Who’s responsibility is it to make sure the brakes are functioning properly? Was the truck inspected? Which station?
@anonymous If you look had looked at the details of the case prior to commenting you would know that he drove past the truck runoff designed for runaway trucks. It was not necessarily malfunctioning brakes per se, as it was down a steep incline and he was supposed to downshift so as not to burn out his brakes. He may not have deserved 110 years but this isn’t a simple case of malfunctioning brakes
