Meta’s Threads App has achieved a staggering milestone, amassing a remarkable 90 million signups within just four days of its launch. This exponential surge in demand showcases the app’s resounding success in terms of sheer numbers. The user base has skyrocketed from 30 million on Thursday to a tripled figure in less than 48 hours. The numerical badges displayed on user accounts serve as verification, assigned in the order of their joining. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg proudly holds the distinction of being user #1.

Threads, one among the numerous apps vying to rival Twitter, possesses a significant advantage over its competitors—a pre-existing infrastructure that can effectively handle the surge in demand. Currently, Threads operates as an offshoot of Instagram. In fact, the sole method of signing up at the moment is by downloading the app and logging in with an existing Instagram account. Threads then seamlessly exports contacts and profiles from Instagram to create a Threads profile. This feature not only expedites the process of finding friends and followers but also offers a convenient “request all” option.

However, it remains uncertain how many of the app’s users migrated from Twitter and how many are simply Instagram users exploring this intriguing new addition. Instagram head Adam Mosseri emphasized that Meta’s objective with Threads is not to overshadow Twitter but rather to establish a vibrant public space for communities on Instagram. These communities encompass those who never fully embraced Twitter and individuals from Twitter and other platforms who seek a more positive and civil environment for discussions, albeit not to the extent of embracing all aspects of Twitter.

Mosseri acknowledged that politics and hard news are inevitably part of Threads, as they are on Instagram to some extent. Nevertheless, Meta does not actively encourage these specific verticals on the app. Instead, the focus is on fostering open and friendly conversations while harnessing the best elements of the Instagram experience to create a unique platform centered around text, ideas, and sharing one’s thoughts.

Threads made a groundbreaking entrance into the digital landscape, garnering a staggering 2 million users within the first two hours of its unexpected debut, a day earlier than its advertised launch date. Within seven hours, signups skyrocketed to an impressive ten million, and by the following morning, the user base had surged to a remarkable 30 million. As Friday dawned, the number of Threads users stood at a remarkable 70 million.

In an Instagram video, Mark Zuckerberg himself described Threads as “an open and friendly public space for conversation.” He emphasized that the app encapsulates the finest elements of the Instagram experience while introducing a whole new platform dedicated to text, ideas, and sharing one’s thoughts.

Twitter, feeling threatened by this perceived “copycat” platform, promptly raised concerns and even threatened legal action. Elon Musk, renowned entrepreneur and prominent figure on social media, voiced his opinion on the matter by tweeting, “Competition is fine, cheating is not.” The emergence of Threads has undoubtedly ignited a fierce competition in the digital realm, setting the stage for an exciting battle of innovation and user engagement.
