mark-zuckerbergThe owners of the kosher restaurant in Rome’s Jewish Ghetto – a historic quarter in the centre of the city – were surprised when Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan walked away without leaving a gratuity.

Their bill came to just 32 euros after a lunch consisting of deep-fried artichokes – a Roman Jewish speciality – fried pumpkin flowers and ravioli stuffed with sea bass and artichokes.

Instead of wine or beer they opted for a bottle of water and a pot of tea.

Waiters at Nonna Betta, which specialises in Roman Jewish cuisine, were amazed by Mr Zuckerberg’s parsimony, not just because of his huge wealth but because of Americans’ reputation for tipping generously, as is expected of them at home.

It was not a case of not enjoying the meal, said the owner of the restaurant.

“I asked him ‘how was it?’ and he said ‘very good'”, the owner, identified only as Umberto, told Corriere della Sera newspaper. “I had gone up to him and said ‘Are you …?’ and he said ‘Yes’.”

It was not the first time that the multi-billionaire chose not to tip – he reportedly did the same thing the night before at Pierluigi, a historic trattoria near Campo de’ Fiori, a piazza in the heart of Rome.

The couple’s honeymoon was a closely guarded secret until a Polish tourist spotted them in the Sistine Chapel, snapped a blurry photograph, and posted it on Twitter – Facebook’s social network rival.

They left Rome on Monday, with speculation that they might be heading towards the Amalfi Coast south of Naples before heading back to the US.

Zuckerberg, 28, whose shares in Facebook are worth nearly $20 billion, married his wife on May 19 in Palo Alto, California.

Their wedding took place a day after Facebook’s initial public offering on the NASDAQ stock exchange.

Zuckerberg, Time magazine’s Person of the Year in 2010, started Facebook in his Harvard University dorm room eight years ago, before dropping out of the Ivy League school.

  1. this is outright LH with no redeeming qualities.

Also, note that news organizations have reported that he had trouble the other day getting cash from the ATM, perhaps he had nothing to tip with??

What happened to being Dan l’kaf Zechus????

  2. Lashon hara. What business is it of ours whether or not he tips? What will be next? Spying on someone to see if he/she benched? I am surprised at Matzav for publishing this.

  3. This article is SO full of lashon haraa, it really should be removed immediately!! (the LEAST of which is in the headline) Do you not have a Rav to answer questions of what is mutar to publish without being over some of the worse issurei doraita..? If not, you’d better get one!!

  4. if someone lives with a got bderech eishus he has no chelek in olam habah so I don’t care if he ate kosher or tips

  5. As reported elsewere, it not as culturally necessary to tip in Rome as it is in the US – he was merely following cultural sensibilities

  6. Another approach – a person has a Right not to tip! A tip is OPTIONAL!
(But hilchos Shmiras HaLashon is not)

  7. To #6: lol! gut gezokt!

Mark is an immature baby! It doesn’t suprise me that these billionares are as cheap as can be when it comes to someone else!

  8. Lashon hara. What business is it of ours whether or not he tips? What will be next? Spying on someone to see if he/she benched? I am surprised at Matzav for publishing this. [2]

  9. He identifies himself as an atheist – he can therefore not count for a minyan. As far as the tinok shenishba remarks, the Brisker Rov zya said “nebech an apikores is also an apikores”. As far as olam haba I dont know, and I belive Hashem is merciful, but as far as us here on earth, he is no longer part of Klal Yisrael (but is still chayav in mitzvos and is not a goy either) if he does not believe in G-d. We all agree that a meshumad, a yid who believes in another religion, is no longer a yid, but we still accept atheists? An atheist is much worse than any idolator according to chazal. Identifying someone like him as a jew is racism. Judaism is a religion, not a race. The religion defines who is a Jew and who is a goy, and who is neither, and a meshumad or an apikores, even nebech an apikores, does not enjoy the privilages of being a Jew nor the permissions of being a goy.

  10. I’m amazed that he eats kosher (at least sometimes). Great!
Hopefully he with internalize a little kedushah.

  11. I don’t believe this story because tipping is not expected in Italy except in cases of extreme satisfaction. Don’t believe it? Google it.

  12. Reb nachman says “we have to be dan lekaf zchus everyone including a rasha bc by finding even alittle bit of good in him you rais him up”

  13. This is a very serious transgression. This loshon hora may cause him to shun kosher restaurants in the future. One should think hard about the consequences of his actions before engaging in this vicious behavior.

  14. seriously? as much as i’m embarrassed to say that i read this article, i’m even more embarrassed to say that i read these comments. 30 comments on one stupid article about some guy in a t-shirt? is he a goy, is he not a goy, yes loshon hora, no loshon hora. who cares? chances are you all read the full article b4 commenting and chances are that you all repeated it to your friends and family. lets all get a life. i heard wal-mart has them for cheap. “no, i can’t go to wal- mart it’s pruste.” “yes you can” “no he can’t.” “no, #1 is right.” c’mon, grow up
