Confederate  flagMississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn said Monday night that the Confederate part of his state’s flag “needs to be removed.”

“We must always remember our past, but that does not mean we must let it define us,” Gunn said.

The remarks come on the heels of a debate about the presence of the Confederate flag in South Carolina.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant said he didn’t expect the state Legislature to overturn the will of the state’s people, but as of Monday evening a petition to remove the Confederate part of the Mississippi flag had racked up 4,500 signatures. Read more at The Clarion-Ledger.
