MK Yitzchok Pindrus, a member of United Torah Judaism, stirred up controversy on Tuesday as he criticized left-wing protestors who staged demonstrations at Ben Gurion International Airport.
During a recorded session of the Construction, Law, and Justice Committee, Pindrus can be heard stating, “Have you witnessed what those protestors did at Ben Gurion Airport? It brings to mind the era of [former Likud MK Moshe] Feiglin. What is this behavior? Fascism. We must put an end to their actions.”
In response to the footage, Pindrus later clarified that he had employed sarcasm, implying that the response would have been different if the individuals in question had been settlers.
The organizers of Monday’s protest at the airport conveyed a strong message to the Israeli government, stating, “Pay attention, we must deliver a resolute and forceful message to the government of Israel: If you attempt to establish a dictatorship, we will know, as we did before, how to paralyze the state and halt the legislative process.”
Despite warnings from the police and the Israel Airports Authority regarding potential risks to hundreds of lives in case of an emergency, the decision to hold a protest at Ben Gurion was made.
Amnon Cohen, the acting director of the Israel Airports Authority, expressed concern on Sunday, stating, “We have witnessed how the airport is an extremely operationally sensitive location that directly impacts human lives. The airport can swiftly transform into an emergency zone where the fate of hundreds of individuals hangs in the balance,” he warned.
According to Cohen, “Ben Gurion Airport holds a position of utmost operational sensitivity. Blocking its operations, regardless of the cause, could result in an international catastrophe. Thus, obstructing Ben Gurion Airport must be strictly prohibited.”
