mofazIsrael’s Vice Premier Shaul Mofaz said Monday that he would like to see 80 percent of charedi youth enlist in the IDF or National Service, according to a report in The Jerusalem Post.

Speaking at a Kadima faction meeting, Mofaz’s comments came as the Keshev Committee was working to replace the Tal Law, which has allowed the framework for haredi yeshiva students to indefinitely postpone IDF service.

The Keshev Committee is being chaired by Kadima MK Yohanan Plessner. It was tasked, reports the Post, with composing a bill for equality in the burden by June 28.

The Tal Law will no longer be valid on August 1 in accordance with a High Court of Justice ruling that it is unconstitutional.

  1. I’m confused why everyone is upset with this.
It seems that according to this Charedim will be able to choose Sheirut Leumi (National Service)

  2. Wait, I thought the IDF doesn’t want this huge influx of Chareidim – and the female IDF soldiers are afraid of the implications to their “equality”.

So which is it, do they want them or not?

  3. #1:
Because it means that he wants 80% of yeshiva bachurim at the age of 18 to drop their learning and enlist. Whether it’s the IDF or national service isn’t necessarily the point.

He can dream on. He himself has to know that such a proposition is a non-starter.
