A Brooklyn kosher supermarket is getting a $2 million tax break intended for neighborhoods desperate for grocery stores. Moisha’s Kosher Discount Supermarket is to receive $1.93 million to double its size on Avenue M in Midwood.
The money comes from the Food Retail Expansion to Support Health program – which targets neighborhoods in Central Brooklyn, northern Manhattan, the South Bronx and other neighborhoods where fresh food is hard to find.
Moisha’s is run by R’ Moisha and Barry Binik and their families.
Even though there are other groceries in the area, Moisha’s says they’re too far for some customers to walk – and more expensive – which is why they will be receiving the tax break.
“The community loves us. They want us to expand,” said Moish Binik. “We can’t afford this without some help.”
City officials pointed to a study showing the neighborhood had “moderate need” for supermarkets, and fewer markets per person than the city average.

Moish Binik is a gem of a man.
The Daily News article claims that their are 10 markets within 5 blocks of Moisha’s. I have asked the Daily News to name them as the neighborhood is mostly residential.
I wonder where they will put the store, unless they build a second floor. I wish them hatzlochoh. I like Moishe’s a lot.
A great great store! We love shopping there. One problem though. Parking is next to impossible! I wish there was an eitza.
What about parking?
B’zman shYisrael oisin ritzono shel makom milachtun naasaes al yday acherim!!
Ich darf gelt oich. Any more hand-outs?
They bought all the houses next to the store on ave. m. As of now they knocked them down and didn’t start building. I think the plans include roof top parking.
They have bought all the houses on the Ave M side of the store. They will be expanding. Rumor has it that they will have a small parking area.
Moish is ah tyerer yid. he should be gebentched with arichas gezunteh yuhrin.
I dont get it Tax Break means just that – a tax break where is the handout of gelt???
