rabederKarl Rabeder grew up poor and thought that life would be wonderful if he had money. But when he got rich, Karl discovered that he was unhappy … so he decided to give away every penny of his £3 million fortune:

“My idea is to have nothing left. Absolutely nothing,” he told The Daily Telegraph. “Money is counterproductive – it prevents happiness to come.”

Instead, he will move out of his luxury Alpine retreat into a small wooden hut in the mountains or a simple bedsit in Innsbruck.

His entire proceeds are going to charities he set up in Central and Latin America, but he will not even take a salary from these.

“For a long time I believed that more wealth and luxury automatically meant more happiness,” he said. “I come from a very poor family where the rules were to work more to achieve more material things, and I applied this for many years,” said Mr. Rabeder.

But over time, he had another, conflicting feeling.

“More and more I heard the words: ‘Stop what you are doing now – all this luxury and consumerism – and start your real life’,” he said. “I had the feeling I was working as a slave for things that I did not wish for or need. I have the feeling that there are lot of people doing the same thing.”

What do you think? Is he doing the right thing or is this just a crazy idea of a rich man?

  1. If this man is not Jewish and comes to such a realization; oy vavoy lau nu on the day of din. This man realized emmett and we have strayed so far we are unable to acknowledge the truth and only response is making stupid jokes and comments. We have forgottened why hashem placed us on this earth ; believe me it wasn’t to see how much money we can amass. Yes, a person needs money to buy food. He needs food so he can live and do mitzvot. But nowadays many live to eat, to work, to buy luxurous cars, houses, and food.
This is the egal hazahav. Do you think 9-11 just happenened? Hashem was sending us a message by taking down the financial center of the world. Now he is again sending us a message,” money doesn’t make happiness.” we have no naviam in our day, so what could be a clearer message???

  2. He is correct in that money cannot buy happiness, since contentment is a state of mind and soul.

I don’t know how it works, but if he gets schar for his charity, then he’s making his money worthwile in a very big way.

For him to leave himself without money for basic necesseties, dosent make much sense.

  3. I am truly appalled by the cynicsm, sarcasm and the general negativity expressed by people commenting on this story.

The first bad impression I have got was the number of people whose initial reaction was, “What’s in this for ME? What can **I** get out of this guy?”

Then we have those people who have the chutzpah and the gall to say that Karl Rabeder is somehow insane. How do they know? Is every yid who comments here a qualified psychiatrist?

And the point that none of you have noticed – yet – is that there is absolutely no indication that Karl Rabeder is Jewish.

But you guys just cannot, or will not, see beyond your selfish attitudes. The point of the story is that Rabeder can do exactly what he wishes with his own money. He might even give some to his local church.

  4. and what i see from the comments on THIS post is that the commentators on this torah-following website dont have proper torah hashkafa and need to learn some musar and not just read the words but take them to heart
