Rise Up Ocean County, a Facebook hate group focused on harassing Jews living in and around Lakewood, NJ and its environs set its sights on its latest target: Kapparos today, on Tzom Gedaliah, at the Bingo store on Route 70 in Lakewood.

RUOC head Richard Ciullo showed up, along with some others, but their efforts ultimately failed, as the Kapparos – at a Bingo wholesale price of $3.99 – have continued despite their protests.

RUOC, like other Jew-haters, have lobbed unfounded accusations of animal cruelty.

A member of Bingo management told Matzav.com that the store has taken utmost precautions to ensure the well-being of the fowl being used for Kapparos today. “Claims of the chickens not being taken care of are just untrue,” the staff member said.

RUOC could barely put together a group for the anti-Kapparos protest. A few stragglers – wearing t-shirts and shorts – got together to voice their opposition. Members of the Lakewood Police Department have been present in an attempt to keep the RUOC members from disturbing the law-abiding citizens performing the religious ritual, customarily done between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

  1. What is the problem? How are the chickens not being treated well? They are being treated better that on factory farms (CAFOs) – from where MOST eggs and chicken in the US come from. Did you know that many if not most chickens on egg farms are not able to lift their heads up fully, and that chickens on ‘chicken’ farms (for slaughter) never see the light of day?! They live in cramped barns and there is such a stench of droppings that they have to spray ammonia due to the bacteria. They then have to spray another chemical so it shouldn’t hurt them. Never mind the antibiotics and growth hormones setc, that they all get — and which peple get when eating them (leading to antibiotic resistance). By letting them out into the sun and grass, the chickens function much better, and, of course are healthier.
That’s where RUOC — and all of us — should be protesting. But you CAN make this protest — with your wallet. Buy organic!
