protestHundreds of protesters took part in the now weekly demonstration against the opening of the Karta parking lot opposite the Old City, in what has become a weekly confrontation over chillul Shabbos in Yerushalayim. Six people were arrested as protesters gathered both at the parking lot and on Rechov Bar Ilan.

Police arrived at the scene and prevented many of the protesters from moving forward, yet others slipped past and made their way towards the parking lot.

Police arrived at the parking lot as well, where the arrests were made.

By 9 p.m., police said the demonstrations had concluded and order had been restored.

Last week, a group of some 200 gathered to protest.

The protests began in June, after the city opened the Karta municipal parking lot near Yerushalayim’s City Hall on Shabbosos free of charge. In attempt to pacify the chareidi communiuty, the city opened a privately owned garage opposite Shaar Yaffo instead, but that has not mitigated the protests over the chillul Shabbos taking place.

  1. No Israel is not a real democracy or a theocracy. If it were a democracy there would be public transport on Shabbos as the will of the majority was taken into account. The will of the minority haredi community is taken into account but ‘taken into account’ means just that. It does not mean always followed. Mayor Barkat has gone a long way to taking the Haredi view into account but majorities have rights as well. The current demonstrations simply increase chillul shabbos in Yerushalayim, not reduce it. Those who drive on Shabbos r”l will not be impressed to stop driving by stone wielding hooligans or by so called Torah scholars, i.e yeshiva bochurim, destroying public property and risking the health of asthmatics and others by burning garbage in the streets setting off poisonous fumes.

  2. To #1 -I would just like to know, if on every weekend people were chas veshalam desicrating your parents or grandparents graves, trampling on it …or stepping on it.Would you say after a few weeks “enough protests”???????????. Which brings me to the conclusion, that maybe maybe you learn a little about kedushas shabbos, espescially in E.Y. which is hashems house, and maybe you’ll get a feeling how pained hashem is.

  3. No stone throwing or other hillul HaShem reported….

    This looks like progress.

It’s their right to protest, but it has to be done in the right way – with sincerity and dignity, no violence or hillul HaShem.
