z8_gnd5296-galaxyIn a land far, far away – 13.1 billion light years to be exact – astronomers have discovered the most distant galaxy yet. Called by scientists “z8_GND5296,” light from the distant galaxy was discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope and the Keck Observatory in Hawaii

“We are learning so much about a region so far back in time it’s hard to comprehend,” lead researcher Steven Finkelstein announced.

The galaxy is about a billion times more massive than the sun.

  1. If the world is only 6,000 years old, when did this light, which takes 13.1 billion years to get here, start travelling?

Did it travel at 2 million x the speed of light?

Or maybe the world was created with the light already 99% on its way?

  2. You realize, of course, that–AL PI PASHTUS–if we SEE a galaxy 13 billion light-years away, that means its light has been traveling for 13 billion years.

  3. Rabbi Yitzchak d’min Acco in his sefer Otzar Hachayim – based on Rabbeinu Bachai’s opinion that we are in the seventh 7000 year cycle – calculates the age of the universe at 15.3 billion years.

The age of the universe currently accepted by secular cosmologists is 13.8 billion years.

  4. The term “light years” is a measure of distance – the distance light travels in that amount of time. In this case, 13.1 billion light years is the distance that the light traveled in 13.1 billion years. This is approximately 1.23 x 10^23 kilometers or 76,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 miles (76,000 million million million miles).

  5. How old were the fruit trees in Gan Eden on Erev Shabbos when they sprouted forth fully laden with fruit? Or the Eitz Hadas? Or all the full grownanimals? Or the very old redwood trees of the forest? What would carbon dating say is the age of the diamonds in the ground (that are in fact coal/carbon kept under intense heat and pressure for “billions of years”)? What about the oil reserves (FOSSIL fuel) that are decomposed fossil bones over billions of years?

The point is Hakadosh Baruch Hu, at the instant of willing our world to be, created a ‘MATURE’ world, billions of years old.

  6. I once hear a Rabbi Triebitz, from Machon Shlomo, not that our count of the “age of the world” only references the day Adom was created, the source for this being the sefer toldos hadom.

we dont know how old the world is, just that Adom was created 5771 year ago.
