It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Mr. Henry Merlis z”l of Cedarhurst, NY. He was 94 years old.

Born on August 16, 1924, Mr. Merlis worked for decades as a teacher at various New York City schools, including a number of yeshivos, such as Yeshiva Torah Temimah in Brooklyn.

A US Army veteran, Mr. Merlis was an exceptional teacher, who kept his classes interesting and engaged his students with his unique sense of humor and quick wit.

A genuine mentch with a kind heart, Mr. Merlis, and his wife, Helene, raised three outstanding sons, Mitch z”l, Mark and Paul. Mitch and Paul are well known for having played varsity basketball and for the wrestling skills, but Mr. Merlis’ children clearly carried on his simchas hachaim, his love of Hashem and His people, and a desire to make the world a better place.

Mr. Merlis was a teacher’s teacher and his memory will live on in the hearts of the students he taught and touched.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. he was a true role model as a English teacher. He respected us and the same was returned. He had a great sense of Humor which we all enjoyed. THE BOYS TODAY ARE MISSING THIS CONCEPT.

  2. Mr. Merlis taught us English in a bygone era where even the Choshuver Bochurim (Yes, some of today’s Roshei Yeshiva) went to English classes and excelled at that too. We had a tremendous amount of respect for Mr. Merlis. He taught the material and made the classes extremely enjoyable. We appreciated his great sense of humor and sharp wit. He was just such a mentch and warm personality. Some 35 years later now, I still find myself quipping some of his one liners. Who can forget that every time someone sneezed in the class, he would nonchalantly take his tie and motion as if he was wringing it out? He would tell us stories about his children who were on the Yeshiva University sports teams at that time. He was so proud of them. And now we are all proud of a man who lived his life beautifully. The world will miss him. Thank you Mr. Merlis.

  3. Thanks for this interesting post.

While I was not aware of Mr. Merlis (I guess I was in different institutions than he was), this post gives an opportunity for all yeshiva alumni (as well as people in general) to reflect upon their teachers and, if they choose, to share memories.

  4. I had him as well in Torah Temimah he was an outstanding teacher and personality ,he will be sorely missed
He understood that being an edjucator was less about tests and going through the syllabus and more about giving his students a tremendous sense of self and accomplishment

  5. Based on the other comments, he must’ve been a special teacher.
I was in YTT (formerly YTV of Flatbush) from 69-78 but don’t remember Mr. Merlis. Which grades and years did he teach?
