Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is in Saudi Arabia receiving medical treatment for pancreatic and colon cancer, the state-owned daily Al-Akhbar newspaper reports.
Citing “informed sources,” the newspaper reported Wednesday that Mubarak, who was toppled from power last month, is currently staying in a military base in the city of Tabuk.
“He is undergoing chemotherapy every five days,” the report said, adding that Mubarak left Egypt a few days after transferring his authority to a military council.
According to the report, Mubarak’s wife Suzanne and his two sons, Ala’a and Gamal, are also living on the base.
Up until the three-week revolution that toppled his father’s regime, it was believed that Gamal was being groomed to become Mubarak’s successor.
Although Egyptian authorities issued a travel ban Monday on the former president and his family, rumors were flying around for days following his resignation that he had left the country. Authorities also imposed a freeze on the family’s assets.
