The nation’s wealthiest Black man called on corporate America to step up and address inequities in society, saying companies that profited from the historic slave trade should consider paying reparations.

Robert Smith, who made headlines last year when he shocked the graduating class of the historically Black Morehouse College with news that he was paying off their student debts, opened up about the private sector’s role in racial justice in an interview with Reuters published Wednesday.

“I think that’s going to be a political decision that’s going to have to be made and decided upon,” the CEO of private equity firm Vista Equity Partners told the outlet. “But I think corporations have to also think about, well, what is the right thing to do?”

Smith suggested corporations can use their “capital to repair the communities that they are directly associated with in the industries in which they cover.”

    • See midrashim for choshek, when we went through the closets and took our reparations. Egypt owes us nothing. The Romans on the other hand…

      • When the Yidden took valuables from the Mitzri’im, it hardly covered the decades of slavery, torture and murder. So Mitzrayim still owes.

  1. He should use his own money to repair what his brothers and sisters destroyed.
Corporate America does not owe them one nickel.

  2. Before that, reparations to Native Americans should be discussed, on a “first abused first served” basis. If anything, native Americans are more entitled since their country is no more.

    • “first abused first served”

The abuse of Native Americans by English settlers only predated abuse of Africans by nine years.

  3. My family came here from Russia in 1892. In Minsk, Kiev, and Chernigov, they were not involved in any aspect of the Atlantic slave trade, and they never owned any slaves in the United States. Anyone who believes that I have an obligation to pay reparations to descendants of people, whom neither my family nor I harmed, would certainly agree that the Blacks living in the United States today would have the obligation to pay reparations to me. This is because, 3200 years ago, my ancestors were enslaved by Africans.

People who discuss “reparations” today with reference to the Atlantic slave trade, were probably inspired by what Jews called “Conference on Material Claims Against Germany.” The vast majority of monetary claims were paid by Germany (just cents on the dollar) for “material claims,” not claims for physical mistreatment, slave labor, or murder.
