Nearly 9 in 10 Americans are fearful that the US economy will collapse amid the coronavirus pandemic, a new poll found.
The survey, released Tuesday by Axios/Ipsos, found that the worry cuts across the political divide, with both 89 percent of Republicans and Democrats saying they’re “somewhat, very or extremely concerned” about widespread economic fallout due to the COVID-19 outbreak that has killed more than 56,000 Americans as of Tuesday.
“As economy woes stick around and health challenges subside a bit, the economy’s going to become front and center,” said Cliff Young, president of Ipsos US Public Affairs. “There’s going to be increasing pressure to open up. But there is less tolerance for easing among Democrats.”
