Netanyahu Heads To Brazil To Salute Bolsonaro’s New Presidency

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu set off Thursday evening on a historic six-day trip to Brazil, becoming the the first Israeli leader ever visit to the largest Latin American country.

Alongside a vehement effort to boost diplomatic and economic ties between the two burgeoning allies, Netanyahu’s main reason for visiting is to attend the president-elect Jair Bolsonaro’s inauguration on January 1.

Netanyahu was set to hold a one-on-one meeting with Bolsonaro in Rio de Janeiro on Friday as well as his ministers of defense, finance and foreign affairs. “We will discuss Israel’s ties with the largest country in Latin America, the fifth most populous country in the world. Brazil is a huge country with huge potential for the State of Israel, economically, diplomatically and vis-à-vis security,” Netanyahu said.

The prime minister was also expected to meet with local Jewish community leaders and attend a Shabbat synagogue service in Copacabana.
