Netanyahu, IDF Chief: Israel Not Seeking Escalation But Will Defend Itself

The Israeli security Cabinet converged Tuesday morning at the military headquarters in Tel Aviv where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Chief of the General Staff of the IDF Aviv Kochavi and head of the Shin Bet (Israel’s domestic security agency) Nadav Argaman delivered remarks to reporters about the current situation.

The “IDF killed the chief commander of the Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip Baha Abu Al-Ata,” Netanyahu said, opening the press conference.

“In the last year he was the main planner of attacks, he has fired hundreds of rockets toward the Gaza periphery communities, which their suffering has not gone unnoticed, he was a ticking bomb. The operation to assassinate him was discussed long in the Cabinet, and the decision to kill him was made unanimously ten days ago,” the premier said.

He concluded by saying that “Israel is not interested in an escalation but we’ll do whatever it takes to defend ourselves.”
