Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he supports the military’s demand for a nearly $1 billion increase in the defense budget despite a growing economic crisis linked to the coronavirus epidemic.

The premier on Wednesday instructed the Finance Ministry to work with the security forces and the National Security Council to bring together funding sources to provide an additional NIS 3.3 billion ($966 million) to the defense budget, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office.

The supplemental funds would be used to finance “routine military operations, the reinforcement of the security barrier which separates Israel from the Gaza Strip, as well as other missions which cannot be postponed,” the press release added.
