Midtown is getting another makeover. The Bloomberg administration is pushing a plan that would significantly alter traffic patterns in an area with some of the most congested traffic.
Under the plan, vehicles would be banned between 5th and 6th Avenues, creating a pedestrian plaza between Herald Square and the Empire State building. Buses would still operate in both directions — and through the pedestrian plaza.
The new Herald Square zone would effectively split 34th Street in two.
On the west side of the pedestrian plaza, all traffic would flow from 6th Avenue to the Hudson River.
On the other side of Herald Square, traffic would move east toward the East River.
The idea behind the plan is to create more space for pedestrians and speed up crosstown buses.
The final design for the plaza and traffic changes is expected next fall. The redesign is expected to cost a minimum of $30 million.

Is this headline accurate? It seems misleading.
The story only talks about banning cars on 34th street between 5th & 6th Avenues, not banning cars on the avenues themselves.
More clarification is needed.
