shlomo-carlebachWhen you hear the name of Reb Shlomo Carlebach, you think Mimkomcha, Shifchi Kamayim, Yisroel Betach and so many other mainstays of Jewish music. You think of Shvartze Wolf and the sweetest of the sweet.

You don’t think of Broadway.

But now, a new Broadway musical, “Soul Doctor,” is examining the life, times and music of Reb Shlomo Carlebach in a study of the man who is widely considered to be one of the modern era’s fathers of popular Jewish music

The two-hour, 30-minute musical is by no means a production designed for a frum Yid, and it largely misses – or ignores – the point that Reb Shlomo’s primary goal – despite objections and questions from some – was to use his song and influence to spread Torah and knowledge of Hashem to as many people as he could. Shlomo ignited the spirit of millions around the world with his soul-stirring melodies, transformative storytelling and boundless love.

Reb Shlomo’s family fled Vienna to escape the Nazis when he was a boy. He came of age in New York and eventually moved to San Francisco, where he established the House of Love and Prayer and began his career in music.

“Soul Doctor” opened Thursday at Circle in the Square Theatre, written and directed by Daniel S. Wise, who focuses heavily on Carlebach’s association with the singer, pianist and civil rights activist Nina Simone, who opens Shlomo’s ears to jazz and gospel. The first encounter between the two comes in a chance meeting at a New York jazz club with Simone sitting at the piano.

Carlebach is played by Eric Anderson and “Soul Doctor” features Shlomo’s timeless hits in its score.

Want to get a taste of Reb Shlomo? Pull out an album of his. Any album. You’ll be just fine without the Broadway portrayal.

  1. While one perhaps may enjoy listening to his music, praise of R’ Shlomo has no place in a Yeshiva oriented site such as Matzav, his kiruv activities not withstanding.

  2. Shlomo Carlebach’s life was a paradox. As you mention in the article, he wanted to spread Torah, but in doing so, some of his actions were very, very questionable. He strayed very far from his days in Bais Medrash Govoha where he learned under R’ Aharon Kotler, ztz”l. However, he brought many to authentic Yiddishkeit also. Only Hashem can judge such a complex personality.
I do find it hypocritical that you give all the details of where we can find this Broadway play and then tell us we don’t need the play to get a taste of R’ Shlomo. Quite manipulative and underhanded. If you really didn’t want people to go to the play, you wouldn’t publicize it!

  3. #1. You can think what you like about R’ Shlomie Zt”L, however, I for one am closer to HASHEM because of R Shlomie and his music. Not all of can be on the very lofty level you undoubtedly believe yourself to be at.

  4. “The two-hour, 30-minute musical is by no means a production designed for a frum Yid”

    Don’t be so vague.

    Tell it like it is.

    It is ‘CHAZER TREIF’!

Kol isha, lack of tznius, and who knows what other problems.

  5. To #1: thank you for playing G-d. Shlomo did many acts of hidden kindness with generosity. After 120 yrs and in Gan Eden you may find yourself on a lower rung than him.

  6. number two- i agree with everything you said, and to one, although i dont agree with the krum stuff that went on,he did deserve credit, and we are not calling him the gadol hador

  8. 1972 SHLOMO CARLBACH COMES TO A LITTLE GOYISHE TOWN OF GRAND RAPIDS,MICHIGAN. I WAS 17,LOST AND CONFUSED WANTING SOMETHING OF SPIRITUALITY BUT ONLY KNOWING FROM THE TEMPLE EMANUEL MY FAMILY BELONGED. HIS PRESENCE AND NESHAMA PULLED ME INTO A NEW WORLD OF YIDDISHKEIT. WITHOUT THIS SHLOMO EXPERIENCE I DOUBT IF I WOULD EVER HAVE BECOME FRUM, LEAVING HOME TO SPEND 12 YEARS IN YESHIVA , RECEIVE SMICHA , AND BECOME A MECHANECH FOR ELMENTARY GRADES.

  9. Reb Shlomo was mekarev more people than any other kiruv worker. True, there were critics of his derech, but it would be unfair to ignore the thousands of documented stories of people who became religious because of Reb Shlomo. For more details see the recently published new biography by Rabbi Natan Ophir.
