brooklyn-bridgeAfter two high-profile security breaches at the Brooklyn Bridge, the city has taken action. The New York City Department of Transportation as of Tuesday had installed new barriers to prevent anyone from climbing to the top of the span.

Late last month, a Russian tourist was arrested for allegedly scaling the bridge. He claimed he only wanted to take photos of the top. After spending a week behind bars, 24-year-old Yaroslav Kolchin appeared in court Friday, where a prosecutor offered him a deal that involved 90 days in jail, WCBS 880’s Irene Cornell reported. But a judge did not like the idea of jail time and ordered the prosecutor to come up with a community service penalty.

The incident was the third security breach at a New York City bridge in just over a month.

On July 22, two American flags on the Brooklyn Bridge’s towers were replaced with whitewashed versions of Old Glory. Two German artists have claimed responsibility. And also late last month, an activist group unfurled a Palestinian flag on the span of the Manhattan Bridge.
